Endless Swarm - The Body Hammer + intervju

Endless Swarm är ett powerviolenceband från Skottland. De dök upp på min radar med sin förra platta ”Manifested Forms” som jag tycker är en fantastisk, den hamnar fortfarande på min skivspelare lite då och då. Så man kan lugnt säga att mina förväntningar var rätt uppskruvade då jag läste att ”The Body Hammer” var på gång. 

Det skulle ganska snart visa sig att mina förväntningar uppfylldes och mer därtill. Det är roligt att lyssna på Endless Swarm då det hela tiden händer saker i musiken. Ständiga taktbyten och galen växelsång på ett sätt som inte låter forcerad eller för att briljera. Det känns som att det är gjort med glädje och för att hålla lyssnaren på halster och uppmärksam för vad som helst kan ju hända. 

Denna platta känns som en helt naturlig utveckling från föregångaren. Det känns som att Endless Swarm har hittat sitt sound och har här gjort lite små justeringar för att leverera lite mer av sin Scottish powerviolence. Den är smittsam och när du väl släppt in den så behåller sitt grepp om dig hela plattan ut. Hela tiden har du ett leende på läpparna. Gillar du grind eller powerviolence så uppmanar jag dig att kolla in Endless Swarm och ”The Body Hammer”. Jag är rätt säker på att du inte kommer att bli besviken. 

För att Heavy Undergrounds läsare ska få en ännu bättre koll på Endless Swarm så skickade jag iväg några frågor till bandet som sångaren Gray hade vänligheten att svara på. 

Hi! Please introduce Endless Swarm to the readers of Heavy Underground?

Hello! Endless Swarm is a Scottish Powerviolence band formed in Edinburgh 12 years ago! We've released 3 albums, a few EPs and one million splits as well spending the past few years playing everywhere and anywhere around the world! For those unfamiliar with Powerviolence we basically play fast short songs with lots of tempo changes, blast beats and plenty of back and forth vocals.

Congrats to the new album ”The body hammer”. Please tell us about the concept of the album as i suspect that the Tetsuo-triology is involved?

Thank you! So like our previous two albums, we write full concept albums around science-fiction themes, using them as metaphors for our politics, morals and for things we have to say. Last year I was skateboarding and snapped my collarbone, I needed surgery to place some metalwork in my shoulder and during the month off from work I binge watched Shinya Tsukamoto movies as well as some body Horror films like Existenz by David Cronenberg. The concept for the album was born from there and it seemed fitting with my surgery, I wrote about rebuilding yourself using tubes, wires and steel rods to become the ultimate weapon and from there went in to themes like transhumanism, being anti-colonialst and veganism. We also use samples from both Bullet Ballet and Tetsuo 2: The Body Hammer to tie it all in.

How would you say Endless Swarm has evolved with the new album when you compare it to your last album ”Manifested forms”?

I would say it was a very natural progression, we really found our groove with Manifested Forms and I think we properly became Endless Swarm with that record, this feels more like a continuation than an evolution and we just wrote what we enjoy playing! There are some more complex bits in it than we've done before but that was just a bi-product of us pushing ourselves, to balance that we also reverted back to some "pie and mash" (simple riffs) of the earlier days!

Scottish powerviolence is not the most common musicstyle here at Heavy Underground. Do you have any more bands to recomend?

I'll recommend some Scottish bands, some defunct some not - SUFFERINFUCK (Scottish Grind), Shank (90s/00s Scottish PV), Gendo Ikari (Scottish Grind), our guitar players old band Gay Panic Defence (Scottish PV) and C.H.O.U. (current Chinese/Scottish PV).

What´s next for Endless Swarm. Any plans?

Lots of plans! The ball never stops rolling! Musically we have a split 10" in the works with some USA/Japanese bands as well as making a start on LP number 4. Show-wise we're in the process of cooking up some tour plans (hopefully Europe and Australia/NZ next year), as well as a show with Wormrot and a weekend in Netherlands next month!
